1.Discuss the role of Grendel in Beowulf.
2.Compare ‘The Knight’s Tale’ to ‘The Miller’s Tale’ in The Cantebury Tales. Which tale do you think is more effective?
3.Compare ‘Sonnet 116’ to The Tragedy of Othello, The Moor of Venice.
4.Discuss the character of Satan in Milton’s Paradise Lost
5.Which society/land do you think is the most effective in Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. Why?
6.Representation is more powerful than suggestion. Discuss this with reference to The Italian and The Monk.
6. Discuss the role of the Albatross in The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.
7.Discuss the role of wealth/money in Pride and Prejudice.
8.The beauty of poetry from the Romantic period lies in its rhythm and form rather than its meaning. How far do you agree with this statement?
9.The most important thing in literature is that it entertain us. Discuss this statement with reference to any two texts we’ve studied throughout the course.
10. Discuss and contrast the role of religion in any two texts we’ve studied throughout the course.
Task:
In your groups, choose one topic. You will give a presentation on one of these topics sometime in December (I will post the exact date in the next two weeks). This gives you about a month to prepare a presentation. It should be researched well and planned out in advance: this is meant to be challenging and you will need to work as a group and in advance. The questions are also meant to be open-ended, which means there are many ways to answer each question. They are designed for you to tell your opinion or make your own argument/thesis. Decide for yourself what you think is the best answer.
Details:
Your presentation should last for 3 minutes x the number of people in your group. So, if you have four people in your group, your presentation needs to last (3 x4) 12 minutes. Question will follow your presentation
The questions are based on the texts we've studied up to week 10. Question 9 and Question 10 let you choose to pick any two texts to answer on, which allows you a little more freedom.
You will be marked as a group based on content, presentation performance and understanding. Anything beyond these are up to you: reading from notes is okay, so are writing handouts and so are powerpoint presentations.
You will present to me and to 2-3 other groups in the classroom. Each group is also responsible for listening to the other presentations and asking questions based on their understanding of the material. You will also be marked on this.
Plagiarism rules still apply. Any group thought to be plagiarising(taking things from the internet or a book and just reading them, pretending it is your own work) will be given a 0% for the assessment. This is non-negotiable.
Other things:
Firstly, the library has some good material for researching things. I would suggest having a look in the English Books section.
If you need any help, ask me either on the forum in the lessons discussion page or you can email me. I won't do the research for you but if you are stuck, confused or want me to point you in the right direction, I am happy to do this. The one I will say is that I do not want to be contacted by every member of one group about the same thing: communicate with each other first and pick one person to email me!
Any questions?
